Take Charge of You Aviation Career – Preparation

I had a great two days off. In aviation, your weekend may not be the usual Saturday, Sunday off. In my case, my current days off are Sunday, Monday. Either way, when I’m coming off my weekend, its time to prepare for the work week. I get all my uniforms ready, I make sure I have the lunch food necessary, and I generally get my mind prepared for the work environment. How do you get ready for your work week? Do you prepare?

As a former mechanic, I used to read one chapter of my General Familiarization Course a day. I was flying on the MD-11 so in my case I would read the MD-11 Gen. Fam. Course book. Over time, I became very proficient in aircraft systems knowledge. I was a Maintenance Representative at the time so trouble-shooting and knowing the airplane really saved my bacon when the aircraft broke down. In fact, I became so proficient, that aircraft Captains would personally request me by name to fly with them, especially if they were going down range i.e. the Middle East.

What can you do today to increase your systems knowledge? Just think how further along you would be in comparison to your peers who aren’t increasing their knowledge? Consider preparing yourself for the job for a 30 day period and see the difference it will make for you and those around you.
