Take Charge Of Your Aviation Career – Complacency

Have you ever made a simple mistake that really cost you? That was my situation today. As I was following my own advice that I give in my book: “Take Charge of Your Aviation Career” I made a dire mistake today.

I have been working nearly 60+ hours on six-day workweek schedule. I experienced physical challenges this week that resulted in pain and had been under a lot of stress with the vigor’s of the job. During my one day off, I was searching online for a better a position that might have been a great fit for me. I applied.

To my surprise, the unusual happened. The hiring manager emailed me directly for more information within the hour. I replied and he requested more. In my complacency and haste, I replied, scanned email and sent it. I did not get a reply back. I became curious and reviewed my email to see why. There it was, a typo. Instead of carefully reviewing and proofing my email, I scanned it. I did not take into account that I was still reeling from the previous work-week and was not at my best.

I should have first showered, prepared myself for the day and sat at my desk. Sometimes sitting at a desk can put your mind in a more positive perspective. I should have then taken the time to give the opportunity the time and attention it deserved instead of responding on the fly. I knew better than that. In my disappointment I realized I made a major mistake. Sometimes we are not at our best and additionally, we may feel a sense of false urgency that is not really there.

Please, do not do what I did. When opportunities come your way, don’t be complacent. Your current situation is just temporary. Pause. Give yourself a chance to take it in. Prepare. Talk through your response plan, then execute.

Some opportunities come only once and redeeming them may not be an option. Until next time…
